# From Tradition to Modernity

**Learning as defined by Hermann Lietz**

The Lietz Boarding School in Haubinda is a school with a unique history and a clear
vision. Founded as early as 1901, Haubinda is one of the **oldest progressive schools
in Germany**—and has lost none of its appeal to this day.

Dr. Hermann Lietz, the school’s founder, had a groundbreaking idea: children and
young people should learn not only in the classroom, but also through **practical
life in the village**, through working together, and through taking responsibility
for the community. This fundamental principle continues to shape our boarding school
village in Thuringia to this day.

## Our Mission Statement – Education with Mind, Heart, and Hands

We are convinced that **a well-rounded education** can only be achieved when the
mind, heart, and hands are nurtured in equal measure.

**Head:** Knowledge and analytical thinking in all types of schools—from the secondary
school diploma to the Abitur

**Heart:** Values such as respect, responsibility, and empathy in a vibrant village
community

**Hand:** Hands-on learning through agriculture, crafts, creative projects, and 
numerous guilds

This helps foster self-confident young people who are ready to take an active and
responsible role in shaping their own lives.

### Tradition Shaping the Future

We combine more than **120 years of experience** in progressive education with modern
methods: digital media in the classroom, sustainability as a way of life, and small
classes with close individual attention. The result: a school that preserves tradition
while also providing answers to the questions of the future.
