# Community & Daily Life

**Feeling secure – learning responsibility**

The Lietz Boarding School in Haubinda is a **vibrant home for children and teenagers**.
Whether they are boarding or day students, all of them grow up in a community that
combines a sense of security, responsibility, and a genuine village culture.

## Life in Boarding School Families

At Haubinda, the students live in small boarding families. **Eight to ten children**
share a house or apartment with **two teachers** on the spacious grounds.

Teachers are there around the clock to listen, offer advice—and sometimes even provide
emotional support

Rituals such as having breakfast together, family evenings, or outings foster closeness
and a sense of security

Age-appropriate support helps children cope with daily life and grow into confident
individuals

This creates a home where children feel comfortable—and at the same time learn to
take on responsibilities.

### Balancing School and Everyday Life

The students are also well cared for in class. **Small class sizes **allow for individualized
attention. Those who need extra help receive tutoring or academic support from the
teaching staff.

**Day students **from the region are an integral part of the village community:

They participate in classes and all projects

They, too, lend a hand in farming, gardening, and workshops

A dedicated bus service takes them to Haubinda in the morning and brings them back
home in the afternoon

The **boarding school’s daily schedule** is clearly structured: study time, free
time, shared meals, and projects alternate, providing the children and teenagers
with a sense of security and direction. In this way, the village community extends
beyond the boarding school, connecting the school, the village, and the region.

### The village store “Schaufenster”

A highlight of daily life is the village store “Schaufenster,” run by students.

Our selection includes: honey, jam, cold cuts, pastries, apple juice, vegetables
from the school garden, pottery, and much more

The young people handle every aspect of the project themselves—from planning and
production to sales

The project was awarded the **Thuringian Future Prize** and is a practical example
of business in action

In addition to the store in Haubinda, there is also the **Schul-Konsum in Westhausen**,
which the Hermann-Lietz School reopened in collaboration with the local community.
This has created not only a store but also an important social gathering place in
the town.

### Experiencing community—on both a small and a large scale

Village life is all about diversity and community:

Boarding school families provide a sense of security

School and leisure go hand in hand

Projects like the village store bring generations and the region together

This creates an environment where children and young people **don’t just learn,
but live**—in a community that supports them.
