FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About the Lietz Boarding School in Haubinda
How can my child adjust to the new environment?
We offer new students a trial stay of several days so they can get a taste of boarding school life and make their first connections. There is no specific adjustment period: from day one, the children are part of the community—with all its ups and downs. Finding one’s place takes time and can take up to a school year. It’s also important for parents to understand that letting go is part of the process.
What kind of accommodation will my child have at the boarding school?
Our students live in so-called families of seven to ten children. Each family is supervised by a “family father” or “family mother”—an educator. In addition, there is a family mentor who provides extra support.
How often does my child come home?
Every two weeks, there is a weekend trip home: Students leave on Friday and return on Sunday. Shuttle buses provide transportation to the train stations in Fulda, Lichtenfels, and Suhl. On the other weekends, your child stays in Haubinda—with classes on Saturday and free time with the family on Sunday.
How are my child’s hobbies and skills supported?
In addition to academic classes, there is a wide range of extracurricular activities and clubs available: sports, crafts, music, art, and much more. Instrumental lessons are offered in collaboration with external music teachers. Talented students receive individualized support.
What happens when there are learning difficulties?
Remedial and tutoring classes are an integral part of daily life. Targeted interventions are available for specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dysgraphia.
What happens when social problems arise?
Conflicts are a natural part of life. The children learn to resolve them fairly and without violence. When rules are broken, disciplinary measures are taken—ranging from extra assignments to suspensions. Social workers provide support in cases of more serious difficulties.
How can I protect my child from alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs?
Minors are prohibited from consuming alcohol or cigarettes, and possession of drugs will result in immediate expulsion. To enhance safety, random checks and regular patrols are conducted. However, as in real life, absolute safety cannot be guaranteed.
Is there a parent-teacher association that can help with problems?
Yes. The Parent-Teacher Association is made up of elected class parent representatives and meets regularly with the school administration and student representatives. This ensures that parents, students, and the school remain in close communication.
What happens if my child gets sick or needs to take medication?
A licensed nurse provides on-site care for the students. If a student becomes ill, she provides first aid and arranges doctor’s appointments. For students on long-term medication, she ensures that it is administered safely—including medications with special requirements, such as those for ADHD.
Do you stay in touch after graduation?
Yes, former students are always welcome—whether for short visits or stays of several days.
How can former students continue to integrate?
Alumni and friends actively support school life, for example by participating in open houses or education fairs. This allows them to share their experiences and guide current students on their journey.
